Situations

S1: There are three people in Vân's family. Her father is a doctor, her mother is a housewife.

Bố Vân là bác sĩ, còn mẹ Vân là nội trợ.
(Vân's father is a doctor, and Vân's mother is a housewife.)

S2: On Sunday, Lan's family went out, but she had to stay at home to prepare for her examination.

Cả nhà đi chơi còn Lan thì phải ở nhà học thi.
(All of Lan's family went out, but as for Lan, she had to stay at home to prepare for her examination.)

Definition

Còn, as a conjunction, indicates that after còn is a different situation opposite to (or different from) what has just been said before.

  • Còn and và: Cf:
[1] Tôi học tiếng Nga và /*còn tiếng Hoa.
    (I study Russian and Chinese.)
[2] Cảm ơn anh, tôi khỏe. Còn /*Và anh?
    (Thank you, I am fine, and you?)
[3] Nghỉ hè, tôi đi Đà Lạt còn / *và vợ tôi đi Nha Trang.
    (For summer vacation, I go to Đà Lạt, but my wife goes to Nha Trang.)

Và is used to link two things or objects of the same nature. Còn is used to indicate a different situation in contrast to the previous situation. Thus, còn and và are not interchangeable. However, in the following situation còn and và are interchanged, and the meaning, subsequently, is also changed.

[4a] Tôi học ở Đại học Kinh tế và vợ tôi học ở Đại học Mỹ thuật. nhưng chúng tôi quen nhau ở hồ bơi.
     (I studied at the Economics College, and my wife at the Fine Arts College. But we met at a swimming pool.)
[4b] Tôi học ở Đại học Kinh tế còn vợ tôi học ở Đại học Mỹ thuật. Chúng tôi quen nhau ở hồ bơi.
     (I studied at the Economics College. As for my wife, she studied at the Fine Arts College. But we met at a swimming pool.)

In [4a], the speaker uses và because he wanted to tell about his wife and himself, without implying any contrast. However, in spoken Vietnamese, this is not a common expression.

  • Còn and nhưng: Cf:
[5] Trời mưa, nhưng / *còn nó đi chơi.
    (It rains, but he goes out.)

Nhưng is used to connect two clauses that are opposite in meaning. Còn indicates two clauses of different content.

Combinations

  • còn (...) thì ...
[1] Tôi thích bóng đá, còn cô ấy thì thích âm nhạc.
    (I like football, but she likes music.)
  • thì (...) còn ... / (...) còn ... thì ...
[2] Sáng nay thì trời đẹp, còn bây giờ thì trời mưa.
    (This morning the weather was fine, but now it rains.)
  • ai (...) còn (...) nấy / người nào (...) còn người nấy
[3] Ai lo việc nấy, còn tôi thì lo việc của tôi.
    (Everyone takes care of their own business, as for me, I take care of mine.)
