Situations

S1: John went to Vietnam to study Vietnamese. He also studies Vietnamese History.

Ngoài tiếng Việt, John còn học lịch sử Việt Nam.
(Besides Vietnamese language, John also studies Vietnamese History.)

The speaker emphasizes that besides his main purpose, he does something else.

S2: Tom studies only Vietnamese.

Tom không học gì cả, ngoài tiếng Việt.
(Tom doesn't study anything else but Vietnamese.)

Vietnamese is the only thing he studies; all others are excluded.

Definition

Ngoài, as a preposition, is used to express an object or domain that is not included.

  • ** ngoài** and không những... mà... còn...:
[1a] Không những tôi học tiếng Anh mà tôi còn học tiếng Pháp.
     (I not only study English but also French.) (Progressive addition; French is a higher level/bonus.)
[1b] Ngoài tiếng Anh, tôi còn học tiếng Pháp.
     (Besides English, I study French.) (English is the main focus; French is an addition.)
  • ngoài and trừ: In many cases, ngoài can be replaced by ngoại trừ or trừ. Trừ is stronger and often used in specific situations like raising conditions or disapproval.
[2] Tháng này, ở đâu cũng nóng cả, trừ / ngoại trừ / ngoài Đà Lạt.
    (This month the weather is hot everywhere except in Đà Lạt.)
