Ở (Prep)

Situations

S1: The dictionary is on the table. Hà asks Nam where it is. Nam answers:

Quyển từ điển nằm ở trên bàn đấy!
(The dictionary is on the table.)

Ở appears after the verb but before the noun to identify the location of an object or fact.

S2: Nam represents his class in a competition. Everyone has high expectations.

Mọi người đều hy vọng ở anh.
(Everyone is placing their hope in you.)

Ở comes after verbs like hy vọng (hope), tin (believe), trông (expect), tìm (find), dựa (rely), etc., to indicate the goal or object of the verb.

Definition

Ở, as a preposition, is used to identify the location of an object or a fact, or to indicate the goal or object of certain verbs.

  • ở and tại:
  • Tại is used instead of ở when a more precise location is needed or in formal contexts.
[1] Lúc xảy ra việc đó, anh ở đâu? (Where were you when it happened?)
Tôi ngồi tại đây! (I was sitting right here.)
[2] Buổi lễ diễn ra tại Quảng trường Ba Đình lịch sử.
(The ceremony took place at the historic Ba Đình Square.)
  • We don't use tại before relative location nouns like trước, sau, cạnh, trong, ngoài, etc.
[2a] Chúng tôi đứng chờ cô ấy ở ngoài vườn.
[2b] *Chúng tôi đứng chờ cô ấy tại ngoài vườn.
  • Ở is used for the goal of verbs like hy vọng, tin, trông, etc. In these cases, ở cannot be replaced with tại.
[3] Chúng tôi tin ở anh. (We trust in you.)
  • Ở is used to indicate a part of the human body and cannot be replaced with tại.
[4] Anh đau ở đâu? (Where does it hurt?)
Tôi bị thương ở gót chân trái. (I'm injured in my left heel.)

Cf. tại (p. 353).
