DoVG

được₁  v.

Core Meaning

được is used to show that the subject receives something favorable, beneficial, or desired. The event brings a positive result or a good outcome to the subject.

In many cases, được contrasts directly with bị. Where bị focuses on negative experience, được focuses on advantage, success, or benefit.

Situations / Uses

S1: The subject receives a favorable action from someone else

[1a] – Thầy giáo khen Nam. The teacher praised Nam.

[1b] – Nam được thầy giáo khen. Nam was praised by the teacher.

→ The focus is on Nam’s positive experience. Who performs the action is secondary.

S2: The agent can be omitted when it is obvious or unimportant

[2a] – Công ty tăng lương cho Lan. The company raised Lan’s salary.

[2b] – Lan được tăng lương. Lan got a salary raise.

→ The agent (công ty) is omitted. What matters is that Lan benefits from the action.

S3: The subject gains or obtains something desirable

[3] – Tôi được một công việc mới. I got a new job.

[4] – Anh ấy được giải nhất. He won first prize.

được emphasizes success or gain, not the process.

S4: A positive result caused by circumstances

[5] – Đi sớm nên tôi được chỗ tốt. I arrived early, so I got a good seat.

[6] – Nhờ quen biết, anh ấy được giúp đỡ. Thanks to connections, he received help.

→ The subject benefits from the situation, even if no clear agent is mentioned.

S5: Positive states or conditions

[7] – Cô ấy được khỏe lại rồi. She has recovered.

[8] – Mọi việc được ổn định. Things have become stable.

→ In these cases, được highlights improvement or favorable change.

Contrast / Comparison (Cf)

được vs bị

được: favorable outcome – bị: unfavorable outcome

[9a] – Nam được thưởng. Nam was rewarded.

[9b] – Nam bị phạt. Nam was punished.

được₁ vs được₂

được₁: receiving benefit or good result – được₂: permission or possibility

[10a] – Tôi được tăng lương. I got a raise. (benefit)

[10b] – Tôi được nghỉ hôm nay. I am allowed to take today off. (permission)

→ These are different grammatical functions and should not be mixed.

Notes

được does NOT always indicate passive voice. Like bị, it focuses on experience and result.

được is rarely used for clearly negative situations.

Incorrect or unnatural: ✗ Tôi được mất tiền.

Correct: ✓ Tôi bị mất tiền.

• In spoken Vietnamese, được may be omitted when the meaning is clear, but keeping it adds emphasis to the positive result.

bị phải₂ mất
