Situations

S1: The principal visited the class and shook hands with all students, one after another.

Ông hiệu trưởng bắt tay từng người.
(The principal shook hands with each person.)

Từng indicates shaking hands with each student in turn (A, then B, then C...).

S2: The teacher answered all questions in order.

Thầy giáo trả lời từng câu hỏi của sinh viên.
(The teacher answered each of the students' questions in turn.)

Definition

Từng, as a quantifier, is used to express the order of each individual member of a group, one after another.

  • từng, mỗi, mọi: Mọi indicates the whole group. Mỗi indicates each member. Neither carries the "one after another" meaning that từng does.

     (The Prime Minister shook hands with each person, one by one.)
[1b] Ngài Thủ tướng bắt tay mọi người trong phái đoàn ngoại giao.
     (The Prime Minister shook hands with everybody.)
[1c] Ngài Thủ tướng bắt tay mỗi người trong phái đoàn ngoại giao.
     (The Prime Minister shook hands with every person.)
